They Say Beauty…

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  Who is “they” anyway?  Can someone tell me where that old cliche comes from exactly?

Well,  I suppose it means that beauty is subjective and in the physical sense, that is likely true.  Things that I find beautiful may very well be nothing special to another person.  I think, in some respects, there are physical attributes that almost everyone could agree enhance beauty, such as symmetry.

And while this is all well and good because I love beautiful things, it is not really the most important part of beauty which I find myself interested in.

There’s the other oft-used phrase, “it’s what’s on the inside that counts,”  that when combined with beauty being in the eye of the beholder that has me really intrigued.  If we just focus in on what makes people beautiful then this subject draws my attention greatly.

Someone could be the most beautiful creature your eyes have ever looked upon: symmetric features, smooth skin, striking eyes, healthy physique, perfect hair, (a beard?), nicely dressed, etc., but if their behavior toward you or someone else was less than cordial, how does that affect your physical perception of this person?  Or, does it affect you at all?

I think we tend to look at beauty very superficially, in general.  We attribute it to the physical.  Sure, we like when people are nice or funny, but we don’t always find them beautiful, too (unless they are also physically so).  My eyes enjoy outward beauty as much as the next woman but I hope that my eyes do not blind me to the deeper beauty that is often hidden in the heart of another human being.

Really, I think the things that God finds precious are more beautiful that jewels or gold.  (Keep in mind that He created human beings, even the physically beautiful ones, so I don’t discount that!)  1 Peter 3:3-4 (ESV) says, “Do not let your adorning be external-…but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit…”

I guess I’m hung up on the part about the hidden person of the heart.  Beauty is so much more than skin deep.  Real beauty, the imperishable and most attractive kind, is well below the skin…in fact, it radiates out from under the skin.  What beauty do you value most?  Does your eye search outward or does it look inward to be satisfied?

This quote is perfectly saying what my book is saying, but with less words. haha

“Since loves grows within you, so beauty grows.  For love is the beauty of the soul.”

-Saint Augustine
