Freestyle Writing Challenge

This here is a new one for me! Yippee! The lovely writer Sara Letourneau nominated me for this here Freestyle Writing Challenge. I done did accept. *nods once for emphasis*

Thanks Sara! I’m happy to have been invited to participate. 🙂 (And that took me a lot less time to put together than I thought it would!)

Honestly, it was more difficult than I’d like to admit, but I still had fun. I hope you all enjoy my crazy brain. 🙂

Here are the rules of the Freestyle Writing Challenge:

  1. Open a blank document.
  2. Set a stop watch or mobile phone timer to 5 or 10 minutes.
  3. Your topic is at the foot of this post. DO NOT SCROLL DOWN TO SEE IT UNTIL YOU ARE READY WITH YOUR TIMER!
  4. Once you start writing, do not stop until the alarm sounds!
  5. Do not cheat by going back and correcting spelling and grammar using spell check. (The challenge is only meant for you to reflect on your own control of sensible thought-flow and for you to reflect on your ability to write with correct spelling and grammar.)
  6. You may or may not pay attention to punctuation or capitals.
  7. At the end of your post, write down “No. of words = ____” to give an idea of how much you can write within the timeframe.
  8. Copy and paste the entire passage on your blog post with a new topic for your nominees, and copy / paste these rules along with your nomination (at least 5 bloggers).

And Sara’s writing prompt was…

Pick any fictional world you’ve read about. Now, pretend you open a book about this world. On the last page, you find a moving / animated picture of the world – and you touch it. When your vision clears, you’ve been transported to this world. Where are you? What happens as soon as you arrive there?

HERE GOES! . . . . . . . . .

Okay, so this may not be as fictional a world as you’re asking for here, but this is where my mind went as soon as I read the question. I’m an Austen fan to the max, so I’ve landed in the fictional world of Elizabeth, Jane, and all their various friends.

Oh how I love this place! I can’t believe my eyes. I have to blink several times to make sure I’m seeing what I think I’m seeing. A little pinch to the arm proves it’s real.

But I’ve come at a terribly inconvenient time. In front of my very eyes are the startled Miss Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. They look to have been in quite the heated exchange.

E & D“Excuse me, I say. Pardon me.” Did I just say, I say? Oh dear. Who on earth am I?

Neither answer me, but both stare. I think we’re all quite flummoxed. I bow and then remember I should curtsy, but it’s too late.

It looks as though Darcy is about to speak, but at this point I’m a little to embarrassed to stand around so I high-tail it out of there on my dainty little feet. Who am I kidding. My feet are not dainty. In fact

No. of Words: 206 in 5 minutes

(Oh my! I’m quite the mistake maker. It took everything in me to keep from going back and correcting as I typed. I don’t know. Would it have been wrong to correct mistakes as I saw them? I wouldn’t have (and didn’t) use the grammar/spelling checkers.)

NOW for the rest of the fun!

You are on a plane that crashes onto a deserted island. With you are two fictional characters and one item for survival. Who are the characters, what is the item, and what happens after you crash-land?

  1. That was fun. I crash landed in the Africa with Karen Blixen and Beryl Markham with a compass. (oops they were real people) I didn’t get very far in 10 minutes but it was a chance to set the scene at least. Fun way to wake up my morning brain and to avoid working on my WIP. 🙂

  2. Yay! 😀 Glad to see you taking on the challenge, Rachael.

What you chose for a fictional world is perfectly fine. And oh goodness, yes, that would be a most awkward moment to drop into. I wonder if it was right after Elizabeth and Darcy first met? (Wasn’t it during that dancing scene? My memory of Pride and Prejudice is foggy…)
