Freestyle Writing Challenge Take 2

Oh man! I have to say, I think this is one of my favorite challenges. I hate the typos, but I’m always missing them anyway, so I suppose it’s not different from the norm for me. This nomination came from Candice Coates! Thanks my lovely friend. 🙂

I’ll start with my freestyle story and then you’ll get all the other info. 🙂

Here’s my challenge from Candice:

You have just purchased your first home. It is old and not in the best condition. It is so terrible that everyone even the neighbors have warned you not to purchase it, but you have. On day one of moving in, as soon as you step across the threshold of the front door, you are transported into  another place in time. Where have you gone? What is happening there? Who is there with you?

The first place my mind goes is, “Tardis moment!” Seriously, it’s bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. I can’t help but wonder where I’ve gone. There is the temptation to step back out but when I turn around the door has disappeared and I am trapped here. I have no idea where here is, but I’m a curious individual. Of course, my family was with me a second ago. They’re not with me now. Am I the only one transported, or have they all been taken to different places?

So where exactly am I? I’m in a castle. The hall is empty, but at the end of the vast room is a large fireplace. I mean huge. It’s carved mantle is so intricate I can’t make out the details from here. I’ll have to move closer if I want to see what it is I’m looking at, but before I can even think about picking up a foot a man walks up to my side and hold out his hand.

I stare at his hand with gaping mouth and no words to utter. I should be asking where am I? Who are you? I can’t seem to formulate any words.

“May I have your coat, Madam?”

“Oh. Uh, yeah. Sure.”

I take off my coat and hand it to the guy. I guess he’d be called a butler? I have no idea. I’ve never been in a castle or had a guy ask to take my coat in such a fancy way, wearing a fancy suit, looking all smug and fancy.

“Do follow me.”

Since I haven’t anywhere else to be I follow him as he leads me off the way he must have sneaked in from while I was staring at the fireplace. We go through a door and enter a hallway running parallel to the great hall we were in a moment ago. This one is line with windows looking out in a courtyard with a large fountain in the center.

The structures are obviously quite old, ancient in fact, but the man’s attire and mien suggest I haven’t traveled that far back in time. I’m mesmerized by all I see. I’ve always wanted to live in a castle and experience all the drafty rooms, dank dungeons, lofty tower views and such.  It would be amazing and here I am standing in one.

Will I be staying here permanently? If not for my family, I’d be okay with that, I think. But I need to know what’s happened to them. Why didn’t they come with me when we stepped through that door?

“Excuse me, sir, but could you tell me where my family is?”

“Elsewhere, Madam.”

“Elsewhere? What does that even mean?”

(Number of Words = 460 in 10 Minutes)

I have to stop and say, when I heard the butler speaking in my head he sounded an awful lot like Lurch. 😀

Rules of the Challenge:
  1. Open a blank document.
  2. Set a stop watch or mobile phone timer to 5 or 10 minutes.
  3. Your topic is at the foot of this post. DO NOT SCROLL DOWN TO SEE IT UNTIL YOU ARE READY WITH YOUR TIMER!
  4. Once you start writing, do not stop until the alarm sounds!
  5. Do not cheat by going back and correcting spelling and grammar using spell check. (The challenge is only meant for you to reflect on your own control of sensible thought-flow and for you to reflect on your ability to write with correct spelling and grammar.)
  6. You may or may not pay attention to punctuation or capitals.
  7. At the end of your post, write down “No. of words = ____” to give an idea of how much you can write within the timeframe.
  8. Copy and paste the entire passage on your blog post with a new topic for your 5 nominees, and copy / paste these rules along with your nominations.

My Nominees Are:

  1. Blonde(Lucy)WriteMore
  2. Kev
  3. Nicholas Hughes
  4. D. Parker
  5. Colleen Chesebro

Your Challenge, should you choose to accept is as follows:

You travel back in time and meet yourself. A paradox is a possibility because you’ve shared important information from the future with your past self. How far back in time have you gone? What do you share? When you return to the present, what has changed? Is it for the better or worse?

I’ve stuck with a time travel sort of theme. 🙂 GOOD LUCK!

To quote the good Candice, “And for those of you who weren’t nominated, do feel free to participate and share the fruits of your five [or ten]-minute labors!”
