We’re here with L.M. Nelson, but before I finish off this fun interview we started on Monday, here are the most important links of the day:
The Guardian as well as L.M. Nelson’s other titles can be purchased on
Now on to the weird, the odd, the fun that is today’s interview!
Sixteen things you (probably) didn’t know about author L.M. Nelson
My first job was…highlighting petition signatures at the Oregon Secretary of States’ Office.
If I wasn’t a teacher, I would likely be…in the medical field or doing something with photography. I’d love to be a full time writer too.
I collect…Ok. Don’t laugh. I collect cows, you know the knick-knacky, plushy, black and white kitchen cows. I also collect shot glasses (although I’m not much of a drinker), Minions, and Futurama figurines.
My favorite word is…downtime, simply because I need some once in a while.
I’m a big fan of…talented kids. I love to see kids who can sing, dance, play the piano, draw, write…We need to encourage these creative talents.
The single best piece of writing advice I ever received is…Write your own story. Don’t let anyone else hold the pen.
The smartest person in my cell phone is…Wait. There’s a person in my cell phone? I hope it’s not a gremlin.
People often tell me that I…need to go out more. But crowds make me uncomfortable. I’m much happier being at home with those closest to me, sitting with my laptop, a cup of tea, and my cat, or enjoying the company of nature.
The best thing I have ever read is…The Outsiders. To this day, that is my favorite book.
I find inspiration in…music and nature. Songs often generate story ideas, and nature helps clear my head so I can brainstorm. Both help me relax.
It really bothers me when…people constantly criticize others. No one is perfect, and a lot of people out there are super critical of every tiny fault they see in others. I’ve run into people, and even know a few, who never have a kind word to say to anyone. Some deliberately go on a man hunt looking for others’ faults. I don’t understand why people do this.
I have always wanted to…travel to exotic places. But with a full time job and lack of funds required to travel to places like that, I’ve never been able to do it.
The worst thing about being a writer is…marketing. I am NOT good at self-promotion and don’t like shoving my books in people’s faces. When you’re an introvert like me, it’s hard to throw yourself out there.
If I knew the apocalypse was coming in 24 hours, I’d…visit my father and experience the end of the world with him, my husband, and my kids.
The three websites I visit most often are…Pinterest, Facebook, and my school district’s website.
You’d be surprised to know that… every pet I’ve ever owned has been a rescue animal, with the exception of fish. I don’t think I’ve ever gone a year in my life when I didn’t have a pet of some kind. I’ve owned tropical fish, a lizard, a hermit crab, gerbils, guinea pigs, several dogs, and many, many cats. Someday I’d like to get a pygmy pig, a parrot, and a hedgehog.
I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to answer all my nosy questions, L.M.! You’ve been a real sport, and I hope everyone has had an opportunity to get to know you. You’re a truly inspiring woman.
