Cover Reveal for Kin & Kind by Laura VanArendonk Baugh

You guys!!! I love this series and I cannot wait to read this final book in the Shard of Elan series by Laura VanArendonk Baugh.

Kind & Kind, book 4

Kin & Kind is the 4th and final book in this series! And with any great book cover reveal, there’s also a giveaway to enter (see the link below!)

Laura was asked how she’d describe the series to someone who hadn’t read it yet.

She said:

“Okay, so, for generations this Greco-Roman-but-Renaissance kingdom has fought off what are basically interdimensional magical winged Viking raids. They thought they found a way to stop the raids forever, but everything kind of went sideways and a mage ended up trapped in the Ryuven world, the one that’s been attacking. She was the only friend of this outcast soldier with daddy issues—that’s Shianan—so he does some extremely questionable things trying to save her life and bring her home, which is even harder because he’s also a royal bastard trying to stay under the radar and his new best friend is a slave who keeps noticing things, like Shianan’s dad is a real turd and the military accounting is full of fraud. Oh, and there’s also a Ryuven disguised as a human who keeps trying to end the war but also trying to help his own people. Basically it’s a lot of people doing the wrong things for the right reasons and making everything very, very complicated.”

Book Synopsis:

Here’s the short description without spoilers:

After generations of war, the fragile new peace hangs by a thread, as Ryuven attacks continue despite the treaty. Exhausted, demoralized, overwhelmed by fierce new magics, and facing dangers from humans as well as from Ryuven, Shianan, Tamaryl, Ariana, and Luca need one final chance to salvage the truce.

If you don’t mind a few spoilers, or you’ve already read the first three books, here’s the full book description:

After generations of war, the fragile new peace hangs by a thread, as Ryuven attacks continue despite the treaty. Shianan leads an exhausted army facing a fresh and magically superior foe. Worried for Ariana, not yet returned from her own deployment, and as demoralized as his soldiers, Shianan is unprepared in every way when Flamen Ande, high priest of the Gehrn cult, re-appears to demand Luca back.

Luca was once enslaved to Ande, but that was a lifetime ago, before the fall of the shield, before the battle which nearly killed the prince-heir, before the desperate truce and the unexpected massacre by magics they could not resist. But that was also only months ago, and thanks to Luca’s devastating honesty, Ande is newly absolved by the court.

Tamaryl has sacrificed too much for this peace, and he will do whatever it takes to preserve it—even bring more Ryuven to fight in Chrenada. When he is given a cruelly impossible choice, he must decide where his faith lies and who can be trusted with the salvation of his people.

Ariana has irrevocably committed herself against the king’s will, but that may be the least of her troubles as she is targeted by those who would use her for revenge. Between human and Ryuven assailants, she must risk all on a defense no one else can use.

  1. You just gotta love Laura’s description of the series. Now that’s what I call a blurb. Those covers are wonderfully captivating; they give a good idea of the mood of the series

    1. I totally agree, Roger! 🙂 How are you keeping up with life at the moment?

      1. I’m OK thanks Rachael.
At the beginning of this year all writing resources were diverted to finally completing, self-editing, tweaking (and naturally re-writing) my trilogy project. ‘The Precipice Dominions’
Vols I (Of Patchwork Warriors) & Vol II (Our Skirmishers of Lace, Steel and Fire) were converted to final editions and Vol III (Daughters of Circumstance, Arbiters of Consequence) I am planning to release on Kindle in October. (’twas a mere 250,000 words).
The whole project tallies up at about 600,000 words; mashes up all sorts of themes and commentaries…….. and (happy sigh) I am content.
I see from your WP you are busy encouraging writers and forging ahead with your own project. Well done, and keep up the good work.
What are you working on currently?

        1. Oh wow, Roger! That’s a fantastic undertaking. I’ll have to wrangle myself an ebook when it comes out. 🙂 Congrats!

I’m staying busy with life in general and mostly working on design projects for other authors. I was hoping to take off the rest of the year so I could focus on my own writing, but I’ve had enough returning clients that I didn’t want to tell them no (the continuity of service and style and all). So, I’m hoping I’ll taper off by November and have a month or so to work on my prequel that keeps getting shoved to the backburner and start planning book 4 (FINALLY). fingers crossed!

          1. To have returning clients is good news Rachael and a reflection on how your work is valued by authors. It would be a bit difficult to turn them down on those grounds of continuity of service & style, particularly if you know they have been waiting.
            And your covers are quality😀!
Though here’s hoping you get the break for your own writing.
            Best wishes
            Roger

            2. Thank you Rachael, I will bear that in mind.
I’m ‘bubbling ‘a bit as the final tweaking on this trilogy is completed. and trying to restrain myself from posting over and over about it (you can oversell a product).
I will keep in touch by e-mail though.
One quote of yours from ‘back a bit’ has kept my focus and drive ‘Keep writing, you mad glorious man’.
              It’s a keeper!
              🌺🌻🌼🌷💐
